What you'll notice in Southland
- ✓Zones vary a lot in size. Some schools have home zones only a kilometre or two across, while others cover large parts of the region.
- ✓Many schools have no zone at all. Plenty of Invercargill schools aren't on the map because they don't have a home zone. See which ones.
- ✓One address can sit in several zones. Click a spot in town and you'll often see more than one school come up.
- ✓Zones change. Some of the schemes on the map took effect as recently as 2026, and schools can review theirs.
Schools that aren't on the map
If you can't find a school in the list above, it hasn't been missed. It doesn't have a home zone. The Ministry's school directory (October 2026) shows every Southland school with an enrolment scheme on this map, apart from Southland Adventist Christian School, whose zone covers most of the South Island and would swamp the map.
Schools without a zone are open enrolment. Your address doesn't decide whether you can enrol, but places can still be limited, so contact the school directly.
Invercargill and Bluff, state primaries: Fernworth, Newfield Park, New River and Bluff School.
Invercargill and Bluff, state-integrated Catholic schools: Sacred Heart (Waikiwi), St Joseph's, St Theresa's and St Teresa's (Bluff). Integrated schools usually give preference to students with a connection to the school's faith, rather than going by address, so ask the school how enrolment works.
Gore: East Gore, West Gore, Mataura, Otama, Pukerau, Waikaka and St Mary's. Gore Main School does have a zone and is on the map.
Elsewhere in Southland: including Riverton, Otautau, Lumsden, Mossburn, Te Anau, Wallacetown, Woodlands, Waianiwa, Drummond, Hillside, Dipton, Tokanui, Takitimu and Waikaia.
High schools: Aurora College in Invercargill, Māruawai College and St Peter's College in Gore, and Aparima, Menzies, Fiordland and Northern Southland colleges don't have a zone either. Invercargill's four other high schools, James Hargest, Southland Boys' and Girls' and Verdon, are on the map, as is Central Southland College. Te Wharekura o Arowhenua in Invercargill and Waiau Area School, which both cover primary and secondary years, also have no zone.
Schools can introduce or change a scheme at any time. To check a particular school, use the Ministry's Find your nearest school tool, or ask the school.
If you're buying
A zone can be a good reason to look in a particular area, but it's worth treating it as one factor, not the whole decision. Before you commit to a home:
- ✓Check the zone for the exact address, not just the suburb. Edges matter, and the map is approximate near boundaries.
- ✓Use the Ministry's Find your nearest school tool and read the school's written zone description. If the map and the written description differ, the written description takes precedence.
- ✓Ask the school directly about enrolment, especially if the zone is a big part of why you're buying.
- ✓Think about timing. Zones can change before your child starts school, so a purchase shouldn't rely on a zone staying exactly as it is today.
- ✓Look at the whole picture: the home itself, the street, how far the school is and how your child will get there.
- ✓If a zone is critical to your purchase, talk to your lawyer about how to handle it before you go unconditional.
Quick tip
Don't treat a listing, or me, as the final word on a school zone. I'll always point you to the Ministry's information and the school itself, because that's where the answer is confirmed.
If you're selling
Zones matter to many buyers, so expect the question at open homes. In your marketing I'd rather point buyers to the Ministry's official information than state a zone as a fact, because zones can change and the map is approximate. That keeps you accurate and keeps buyers from relying on something that may have moved.
Where I fit in
I'm a real estate salesperson, not the Ministry or a school, so I can't confirm an enrolment for you. What I can do is help you shortlist suburbs, point you to the right official tools, and find homes in the areas that suit your family. If you'd like me to keep an eye out, tell me the areas you're interested in and I'll let you know when something comes up.
This is general information only. School zone boundaries on the map are approximate, simplified for display, and may be out of date; the school's written enrolment scheme takes precedence, and enrolment enquiries should be made directly to the school.
